Dear Worklife

Each month Worklife answers your career development questions. To ask us a career development question, simply click here now. This month's Q&A looks at staff retention in times of uncertainty.

Q: With the current economic pressures in Australia and globally, how can I, as a Human Resources Manager, address my team members’ concerns and assure them that their retention is key to the organisation’s success?

A: Most experts believe that we are already in, or will move into, a recession this year which means organisations need to cut costs – unfortunately, this usually involves people. However, economies rebound and when they do, organisations find themselves in the same situation as pre-recession times with severe skill shortages and the need to develop talent.

During times of economic downturn and negative growth, communication is paramount! Team members need to understand why the organisation makes the changes it needs to remain viable, and they need to understand how any change affects them.

If staff turnover is on the cards for your organisation, speak to team members individually, discuss their concerns and their options. To reassure key members of their position:

1. Communicate with them openly about the value they bring to the organisation;
2. Remain positive and address office gossip as it arises;
3. Ensure team members are engaged in any change, and not a consequence of it; and
4. Be consistent with your messages!

If your organisation has to resort to redundancies, provide front line managers with the training, support, and reassurance they need to be able to undertake the task with empathy and effectiveness. Individuals that remain will remember exactly how layoffs were handled – good or bad – and this may affect their future loyalty and engagement.
