Dear Worklife

Each month Worklife answers your career development questions. To ask us a career development question, simply click here now. This month's Q&A looks at cost effective ways to manage people and business needs during times of a slowing economy.

Q: My organisation is feeling the 'pinch' of the tough economy.  What strategies should we look at to reduce costs?

A: From a people perspective, there are many strategies to consider when needing to reduce costs and maintain the motivation of your team. Consider the following:
1. Analyse the need for contract or casual staff and scale back if possible;
2. Encourage staff to take annual and long-service-leave which your organisation will have accrued;
3. Ask staff for their creative ideas on how to attract new business and try some;
4. Review other costs in the business and make cost reduction a focus; and
5. If redundancies are necessary, consider asking for volunteers.

Feature article: A class with Drucker: The lost lessons of the world's greatest management teacher

Peter Drucker continues to exert a profound influence on the practice of organisational management. His own writings on management theory and practice continue to be widely read and, since his death in 2005, a number of new collections of his writings have been published.  David Binns reviews one such collection: William A Cohen's book, "A Class with Drucker", which shares some of Drucker's more provocative insights.
