A word from the MD, Peter Tobin
The Australian government announced last week that Australia was not in a recession – technically anyway. However, despite the reported economic increase, individuals and organisations still need to be mindful and cautious about over-extending themselves. In this issue of Worklife News Alert, we consider how to stay engaged in your career during slow economic times, as well as practices organisations should adopt in order to avoid knee-jerk reactions.
We also have an exciting new workshop to tell you about. Our Job Readiness Workshop is aimed at helping people who are tackling the job market during these demanding times. I hope you enjoy this latest issue of Worklife News Alert, and as always, if you would like to tell us what you think why not email us with your comments and suggestions, click here to contact us now.
Dear Worklife
Each month Worklife answers your career development questions. To ask us a career development question, simply click here now. This month's Q&A looks at staying engaged in your current role:.
Q: I’m getting stale in my current role but I’m scared to leave with the current economy. What can I do to regain my motivation while staying in my current role?
A: This is a common theme in many organisations. The economy creates a need for security, which team members achieve by holding onto the role they currently have. But if you are competent in that role, performing to acceptable levels, and the challenge has gone, you can lose focus and become stale and disengaged. Here are our tips for remaining engaged in your current role: 1. Become involved in projects and share your experience; 2. Challenge your colleagues to an improvement drive in your area of responsibility; 3. Consider enhancing your existing role in some way; 4. Develop creative new strategies to be more efficient and/or grow the business; and 5. Understand what you are responsible for (KPIs or KRAs) and work on improving your output.
Enhancing your role can boost your morale and motivation. To read more on Worklife’s recommended career enhancement options, click here.
