WACKY OFFICE GEAR: Folders with a difference

Hi everyone,

Welcome to Productivity Plus, your weekly newsletter on how to get more done in less time.

VALERIE'S TIP: Top 3 ways to get motivated We can all do with an extra dose of motivation at work sometimes. As a multiple business owner, I know that I’m more productive when I can rely on a few tools to keep my momentum going. So what are they?

1. Set a reward for every milestone. Barack Obama is no stranger to this - everyone knows his kids were rewarded with the new a puppy at the end of the election campaign. You can even set your rewards for every hour (or period of time) that you work on a project. Depending on the nature of your work, your rewards can be as simple as treating yourself to a cappuccino and a walk in the park to something more fancy.

2. Just get started. There's nothing more overwhelming than simply thinking about all the work you need to get through. You can end up making a mountain out of a molehill. Instead, just get started. Invariably, the task at hand always seems smaller once you've gotten going.

3. Announce your intentions. It's great to have a group of colleagues or friends who can support you in your goal. Choose carefully who you announce your intentions to. You want people who will hold you accountable but who will be supportive at the same time.

WE RECOMMEND: The Power of LessAt the Business and Careers Institute, we’re passionate about productivity. But that doesn’t mean we love being busy just for the sake of it. Far from it. We believe in getting things done in the simplest, most efficient way.

So we love this book by productivity blogger Leo Babuata: “The Power of Less: The Fine Art of Limiting Yourself to the Essential … in Business and in Life”.

His ideas are simple (of course) but powerful.  It’s a
worthwhile read if you like the idea of being able to
get more done in less time.

PAUL’S KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS In Office 2007, when you want to access a menu or an icon using the keyboard - hold the Alt key down for three seconds and you'll see a series of shortcut references overlaying the Tab Sheets and Ribbons.

Try this:
  • Hold the Alt key for a few seconds.
  • Now press "N" for I(n)sert.
  • Press "T" for Table.
  • Using your keyboard arrow keys, press the down-arrow a few times and then the right-arrow a few times. When you press Enter you will have inserted a Table using only the keyboard.
  • Press the Alt key to turn off the shortcut references when you're finished.
Try it! It’s easy.

One-day workshop: Upgrading to Office 2007Have you recently upgraded to Office 2007? Is your team struggling with the NEW features, tabs and ribbons? Even though it's the same suite of programs, Office 2007 can seem like a whole new software package. You need to use it in a different way to previous versions.

If you have upgraded from Office 2003 (or earlier), all you need is the right training to learn our intuitive way to navigate your new software. At the end of the workshop, your team will get rid of frustrating attempts to figure out how Office 2007 works. They will become power users of this new software.

Your team will easily find all the features that you already know; and MANY more. Importantly, you'll also ensure compatibility with previous versions of Office using various "save" techniques and the "compatibility checker".

When: Thursday 5 March 2009
Time: 9.00am - 5.00pm
Cost: $325 (includes GST)

WACKY OFFICE GEAR: Folders with a differenceWe love these folders! When your day is full of meetings you can end up with a swag of folders to carry to each one. Sometimes, there are useful notes in them. Other times, you carry the folders around simply because you feel like you should bring something more than just a pen to the meeting.

That’s where these folders come in. They tell the truth - emblazoned on the cover.
