Dear Worklife

Each month Worklife answers your career development questions. To ask us a career development question, simply click here now. This month's Q&A looks at the “what next” of a career planning session:

Q: I have recently participated in a career planning and development session along with my team, which my company just conducted. I gained a lot from the workshop but I am not sure what my next step is, or should be?

A: While these sessions are immensely valuable and provoke a lot of thought around your current career and your future, it is important to follow some detailed steps to guide you along the career planning path. Furthermore, while these sessions are often conducted over one or two days, you should remember that rarely are decisions made or clarified in a day nor do they occur in isolation.

In thinking about your career, there are a few important steps to take:

  1. Reflection – in order to think logically about your career, it is important to reflect on your learning experience including your goals for attending, the standout things you learnt as a result of the session as well as the outcomes. Furthermore, you should reflect on your perceived needs and wants and whether or not your current role meets these.
  2. Planning – while many of us make plans and set goals in our heads, it is vital that you document these in a Career Planner. This planner should set out all the things you desire from a job/career, your satisfiers, your negotiable and non-negotiable items as a well as a pathway of how to achieve your ideal job. It involves planning, research, reflection, time and most importantly patience.
  3. Discussion – your organisation gave you a clear signal they support career planning when they implemented these sessions. You should therefore feel comfortable to have an open and honest discussion with your manager or team leader about your career plan. You may not be looking for a different job, but rather an enhancement to your current role. You may not want to leave your company, but rather you may want further engagement with your tasks.

However, perhaps the most important thing to remember when assessing and making career decisions is that plans are fluid. You should be prepared to re-evaluate your career plan regularly in light of changing work and life patterns.

Feature article: Recession's silver lining? Increased adaptability

In a recent article included in Talent Management magazine online, “senior executives and managers say the people they work with are more adaptable today than a few years ago.” To be precise, 57% of leaders agreed with this statement.

Martin Chuck, the CEO of NFI research, the authority who conducted the research, deduced that this was in part due to the fact that individuals and businesses have had to be more flexible in their approach when considering the impact of economic conditions. Similarly, technology has also encouraged individuals to be more adaptable, embracing ever advancing changes.
