Dear Worklife

Each month Worklife answers your career development questions. To ask us a career development question, simply click here now. This month's Q&A looks at staying engaged in your current role:

Q: I am a HR professional planning my 2010 calendar now the new financial year has started. What do you think are the upcoming events that I need to be aware of in my planning?

A: There are a number of significant milestones facing HR practitioners as they plan for 2010 including (hopefully) a turnaround in the economy, emerging technologies, and the usual challenges of planning and managing budgets. From a careers perspective, we are already seeing small signs of increasing vacancies and a need to ensure the engagement of existing workers.

In the professional sector, Advertising and Marketing vacancies increased in June 2009 compared with previous months and in trades; wood workers, hairdressers, and food vacancies increased. Movements in these sectors may lead to increased competition and provide more negotiation power to applicants.

Many businesses, due to global economic pressures, are seeing a stagnant workforce where team members are staying put. This can lead to decreasing levels of engagement or lack of challenge, which we mentioned in last month’s newsletter. Implementing engagement strategies can assist in maintaining team member excitement for work and contributions.

Feature article: The many faces of redundancy

While much has been written about the downturn in the world economy of late, and the flow-on effect this situation is having on the majority of organisations and functions globally, it is important to remember that not all change is negative.

This month’s feature article comes from HR Magazine and discusses the effects, and many faces of, redundancy. The piece written by Sarah O’Carroll talks with four professionals about their experiences in being made redundant – everything from how the meeting was handled to what support they were offered post-employment. It is an honest and uplifting look at how redundancy and the outplacement support provided post-employment for all four professionals has led each of them in a new, positive direction. What's happening at Worklife this month?

Worklife has begun the new financial year with many changes. Here is a look at what is happening this month:

  • Job Readiness Workshop
Some organisations are restructuring their business in small but significant ways during these tough economic times. The result may be redundancies. Our Job Readiness workshop is a one-day workshop to help displaced team members turn around their situation and re-engage with the workforce. We present this workshop in-house if you have a number of team members or if you have one or two displaced team members they can attend a public workshop conducted in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne each month.
