Dear Worklife

Each month Worklife answers your career development questions. To ask us a career development question, simply click here now. This month's Q&A looks at understanding employee needs in relation to career fulfilment.

Q: Employees in my organisation are starting to consider their next career steps. What can I do to understand and effectively address their needs?
HR Manager, Queensland

A: Different things motivate each team member (employee) but there are common areas to consider when reviewing employee needs and wants - which eventually lead to engagement.  You might consider reviewing:

  • Culture - what behaviours represent your organisation's values?
  • Development opportunities - can team members grow through learning and experiences?
  • Flexibility - do you offer flexibility in work practices to meet lifestyle needs?
  • Job content - do you provide challenges and resources to meet those challenges?
  • Remuneration - are salaries, bonuses, and other payments competitive in the market?
  • Work environment - do team members enjoy the culture of your organisation?

Team member surveys can gather this information and help you in developing your HR strategy around team member needs and engagement.

Feature article: Ten ways to align business and employee goals

As human resources professionals, we realise that one of our most critical functions involves administering our organisation’s performance management system. According to an article in HR Daily, the success of an organisation’s performance management system “hinges on aligning employee and employer goals.”

While “it allows employers to identify the skills most in need of development, to alert management to talent deficiencies in specific departments, and to target areas where low-performing employees need improvement...” due to the current economic climate, now more than ever, HR Managers need to ensure employees' goals fully align with those of the company.

An example of the ten steps to getting alignment right include: know the goals; get buy-in; work the gaps; and measure twice, cut once.
