Latest HR stats

According to a survey by Chandler McLeod Group (CMG) released on 12 January 2010, 'almost all employees are keeping their eye out for work because an underlying lack of trust towards employers has developed throughout the global financial crisis."

Of the 930 candidates surveyed, 72% were looking for work outside their current industry and 62% were looking for work outside their current specialty, indicating the level of disengagement in the workforce currently.

Quote of the month

"Motivation is a fire from within. If someone else tries to light that fire under you, chances are it will burn very briefly."

Stephen R Covey

A word from the MD, Peter Tobin

Welcome to the first edition of the Worklife News Alert for 2010! I hope you had a fantastic Christmas and New Year’s break, and are into the full swing of 2010.

With the New Year, we have decided to depart from our traditional newsletter format. Highlighting a valuable business development opportunity with uSucceed in Life ("uSucceed")– and one that we hope will benefit our clients and coaches – we will begin a series of articles written by the organisation's founder Peter Stephenson. This month, we bring you the first article in the series which discusses the myths and truths of how young people achieve success in their lives.

Also in line with this very exciting business development opportunity, we are also offering an Special Promotion in conjunction with uSucceed – read on to find out how to enter.

As always, I hope you enjoy this, our first issue of the Worklife News Alert for 2010. So we can keep improving and changing for 2010, don’t forget to tell us what you think - why not email us with your comments and suggestions (click here to contact us now).

Feature series with Peter Stephenson

The new Feature Series is authored by Peter Stephenson, founder of uSucceed in Life. Peter Stephenson has studied the success patterns behind 100 world famous people when they were young. Based on these profiles, Peter’s website uses career development tools to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and know-how to breakthrough life’s challenges.

Peter is also the author of four Student Audio/Workbook Programs on career development, and four books on executive development and coaching. Earlier in his career, he researched and developed a career guidance methodology for undergraduates and graduates. Educated in the United Kingdom, Peter achieved a postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies, specialising in Behavioural Sciences and is a Professional Member of CDAA.

Article 1: Myths and Truths
The first article dispels the myths and reveals the truths about how young people achieve success in their lives. Based on his study of 100 world-famous, successful people Peter discussed the myths and truths about growth dynamics, work style, personal identity and 'development trajectory'.

Fact or fiction:
Does success in life usually come as the result of defining what this means to you and pursuing it when you are still quite young?

Do you require advanced tertiary degrees and qualification to be successful?

To succeed in life do you have to be a driven self-starter?

To read more about these myths and truths as well as steps to overcome these barriers, read the full article by Peter. Click here to read the article.

Check out www.careermums.com.au.

In researching this segment for the newsletter, I referred to the CDAA website for any new online tools or blogs they recommended. I came across CareerMums (www.careermums.com.au) which is an online 'candidate board and careers centre for working parents and parents returning to work ... targeting skilled parents aged 30-50 years of age who are looking for flexible roles to juggle work and family'.

As well as listing full time, part time, job share, casual, volunteer and other flexible work arrangements, CareerMums provides access to:

  • Toolkits for HR teams around working parents and parental leave;
  • Blogs and social networking;
  • Newsletters;
  • Career resources; and
  • Networking events such as parental retreats.

Once again, Worklife is hosting the CCCP's around the country and across the Tasman.  However in order to meet the demands and the schedules of our clients and coaches, in 2010 Worklife is scheduling workshops as and when YOU want them to be held!

Therefore, we are now asking for expressions of interest in programs being held in:

  1. March in Christchurch;
  2. April in Sydney and Melbourne; and
  3. May in Auckland.

Once we receive sufficient interest in each program, we will offer dates and set the CCCP's accordingly.

  • A set of Worklife’s Card Sort Discovery Tools;
  • All learning materials;
  • Certificate of completion;
  • Ongoing support from Worklife; and

Card Sort Refresher Workshop (CSR)
From the beginning of 2010, Worklife is proud to present a brand new workshop to Worklife Certified Career Coaches – Card Sort Refresher. This one-day workshop refreshes participant understanding of Worklife’s Card Sort Discovery Tools and provides updated and new resources. In 2006/07, Worklife redesigned the Card Sort Discovery tools with new content, facilitator’s guides, newer more professional and contemporary presentation, as well as to align the cards with adult learning principles and research.
